UPDATE: David's Recovery

Here's a little update on our son, David.

A couple of hours ago, we left the Scottish Rite Hospital in downtown Dallas and transported him home. That's a small, but sweet, victory on the way to a full and complete recovery. Upon arriving at our house Jane, our German Shepherd, spent about 5 minutes licking him from head to toe. Good thing since he hasn't gotten a bath in some time. ;)

Less than a week ago, Dr. Steve Richards (Orthopedic Surgeon) operating on David's back for nearly 7 hours. He went in from the front (lower stomach) to remove a mal-formed vertebrae in David's back. Then they flipped him over and went in through the back to pull together the vertebra above and below the removed piece. Screws and a rod are holding this in place. Then, in order to keep his back properly aligned with his hips, he was placed in a cast from his chest to his waist and then down the left leg. He will be in the cast from 6-8 weeks.

He has had some back and leg pain, some nausea, and a LOT of frustration about being stuck in the cast. He will remain horizontal until the cast is removed. He will either be in his bed, or in a very reclined wheel chair. Given how hard it is to get him in and out of our car, I doubt that he'll be leaving the house much, if at all.

Current prayer needs. . .

First, we thank God for his faithfulness and tender mercies. He has been with David up to this point and we rejoice in that!

Next, pray for relief from pain in his back and left leg.

Also, pray for his young faith. He is really facing a time of trial and questioning right now as he passes through the fires of pain.

Finally, pray that the Holy Spirit blesses our 11 year old boy with supernatural patience over the long process of recovery.

2 Cor 4:7-10 (NLT) We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves. We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.

Gordon, so sorry to hear he is in pain, I cannot imagine having surgery on both you tummy and you back at one time. I am praying for a swift end to the pain and that he can handle the cast and having to be in a reclined position for so long. He is a precious young man and God is with him. Love and pray for all of you. In Him, Shirley White.

He seems to be making constant improvement. Has good days and not so good days.
