God's job approval drops

The Almighty's new polling numbers are in. Good thing this isn't an election year for the King of Universe because only 52% of Americans approve of his job performance. On the brighter side, only 9% say they disapprove. Hey, at least he's doing a bit better than Obama (45%)!

Public Policy Polling used automated telephone interviews to poll 928 American voters. The institution tried to get an equal sample of liberals and conservatives.

The question that was asked was: "If God exists, do you approve or disapprove of its performance?"

Honestly, I think the real numbers should be lower, but folks are just a little fearful of giving him bad reviews. I mean, with all the miscarriages, cancer, disasters, and the overall decline of the economy, it's a wonder God did better than 30%!

But here's the thing, God has never ran for election and has never asked people to "approve" of how he handles things. And, some of the greatest men and women of faith have had issues with some of God's plans. Right? Abram, Habakkuk, Peter. . .

Perhaps a good working definition of what faith in action looks like is this: Trusting in God even when you don't agree with the way he's handling your life.

The truth is, what people want and what God want are often quite divergent. Paul seems to hint at this when he asks, "Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ." Galatians 1.10 Yes Paul, God's ways and people's ways aren't always all that compatible.

So. . . . do I approve of God's job performance? Better question: Does it matter?

Lord, help me to trust in your love, your mercy, and your power, NO MATTER WHAT. Amen.
